Eyebrow windows are an impressive way to get light to a top floor and provide ventilation as well. They make a distinguished addition to any building. Eyebrow windows are typically located high on a building’s façade, and, as their name implies, are curved upward like an eyebrow.
Eyebrow windows date back to medieval times. They first appeared on the thatch-roofed cottages of this period. However in the late 19th century, Boston architect Henry Richardson, popularized these beautiful windows in the United States. His eyebrow window designs were characterized by their long, narrow slits and sort windows.
Today, eyebrow windows can be found on nearly every style of home. They vary widely in the size of the curve and the length of the window itself. Designers can make the windows provide a soft pleasant curve to a tall half round that clearly accentuates the roofline. Eyebrow windows provide an unexpected break in the roofline from the exterior view and a lovely interior detail, as well.
Eyebrow windows are not inexpensive, however. In general, any time you break from a straight roofline, you’re spending a good deal of extra money. In addition, most eyebrow windows require a custom made sash and some complicated framing and roofing. Some window companies make half round stock windows, but true eyebrow windows are semi-oval or a segment of a circle. Therefore, these windows must almost always be custom made, adding to the price. Many clients choose, therefore, to use a half round window in place of a true eyebrow to save on cost. In addition to the cost of the custom made window itself, you must also factor in the cost of cutting and finishing the corresponding interior drywall.
Finally, there is additional roofing cost to an eyebrow window. There are several ways to accomplish roofing with an eyebrow window, but suffice it to say that all are more complicated than a simple straight line roofing job.
One way to give your home a vintage appearance and save money on your eyebrow windows is to search for an architectural salvage eyebrow window. These windows have been salvaged from old homes and always come with a great deal of character. They often need some repair and glass replacement, but they are typically very beautiful and less expensive than having your windows custom made.
You’ll not find a more beautiful way to make the exterior of your home stand out than installing eyebrow windows. They do add a bit of expense, but can be very worth the cost.
