A picture window is a large, oversized window that may or may not contain panes. Often a picture window is used in an area where one would normally install two windows. But, putting in a picture window instead gives a larger view of the great outdoors.
Picture windows are great accents for areas with beautiful views, such as those you’d find near water or in the mountains. But, even if you use a picture window simply to frame the view of your garden or pool, it makes a lovely detail.
There are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind if you’re planning to install a picture window. The first is that these windows do not open. For ventilation in the room, you’ll need to be sure that you’ve installed opening windows, too.
In addition to being non-functioning windows, picture windows also often require tempered glass. Because they are typically a large single expanse of glass, they must often be tempered for safety. Check your local building codes to determine what size windows require tempered glass in your area. Windows with tempered glass cost a bit more, but they’re critical for safety.
You can find picture windows in wood or vinyl frames, with glass or fiberglass panes. Vinyl windows are low maintenance, but keep in mind that they cannot be painted, so you’ll be stuck with the color you choose for the life of the windows. For this reason, most homeowners choose white vinyl windows. Wood windows allow for painting, but this also means that they need more maintenance than their vinyl counterparts. Every few years, you’ll have to paint them, even if you like the color.
Think carefully when choosing picture window treatments. The purpose of picture windows, after all, is to let the outside in. Therefore, any window treatments you choose should open easily to reveal the beauty of the outdoors. Fixed window treatments allow privacy, but defeat the purpose of the window. You’ll find that your picture window can handle nearly any sort of window treatment you’d use with any other window, unless it is extremely wide. If your picture window is very wide, it may require custom made curtains, shades or blinds.
A picture window is an elegant way to give your room a focal point and frame a beautiful view. Consider adding at least one picture window to your new home.
